To register for the PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty Course you must:
- Be an Open Water Diving Course Instructor or be currently enrolled or have completed an IDC/OWSI course within the past 12 months.
- IDC/OWSI applicants may apply for Specialized Instructor certification only after successful completion of the IE.
- Recent diving experiences – We recommend that you Review of diving Completed if you have not dived for 12 months.
- Good health and no congenital diseases that would be an obstacle in learning to dive.
Upon successful completion of all course requirements, you must provide evidence of 10 recorded fish identification dives.
Underwater Navigation Instructor Specialized Course lasts 1 day.
The course consists of two parts:
- knowledge development
- Open Water Training – 1 session of underwater navigation training

Improving Underwater Navigator Instructor Knowledge
The PADI Underwater Navigator Instructor Specialized Course includes 1 open water training dive.
There is a knowledge development section that is done before we do diving training.
In the knowledge development section you must perform the following actions:
- P presents knowledge development from the PADI Underwater Navigator specialist manual by teaching questions left out of the review.
- Review and understand the objectives and goals of the PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty Course.
- Reviews and explains course navigation standards and procedures from the PADI Specialty Course Instructor Manual and lists all student and instructor equipment requirements.
- Demonstrate expertise in developing all knowledge
- Explains how to control all parts of the course in a way that allows the diver to meet the course requirements.
- Attend a marketing and promotion workshop where you will learn techniques for promoting your Navigation course to students and the diving community.
- Participate in pricing workshops
Underwater Navigator Instructor training course in open water
There are 3 training dives to become a PADI Underwater Navigator.
During the Underwater Navigator Instructor course, you must complete all diving requirements, which includes at least 3 practice dives out of 1.
Before diving, you must explain to the learner the considerations for training in the Navigation specialty diver course.
During diving training you must:
- Demonstrate mastery of all aquatic skills requirements for the Underwater Navigator Specialist Diver Course.
- Offering open water instruction from the Underwater Navigator specialist diver course.
- Demonstrate proficiency in all requirements of the Underwater Navigator specialty in open water.
Upon completion of all requirements, you will receive the PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty Instructor certification.
