To register for the PADI Dive Instructor Underwater Naturalist Specialty Course you must:
- Be a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor or be currently enrolled or have completed an IDC/OWSI course within the past 12 months.
- IDC/OWSI applicants may apply for Specialized Instructor certification only after successful completion of the IE.
- Recent diving experiences – We recommend that you Review of diving Completed if you have not dived for 12 months.
- Good health and no congenital diseases that would be an obstacle in learning to dive.
Upon successful completion of all course requirements, you must provide evidence of 10 recorded Underwater Naturalist dives.

Knowledge Development Underwater Naturalist Instructor
The PADI Underwater Naturalist Instructor Course consists of one training dive.
There is a knowledge development section that is done before we train in Open Water diving.
In the knowledge development section you must perform the following actions:
- Presents the development of knowledge from the PADI Underwater Naturalist Manual by teaching questions left out of the review.
- Review and understand the objectives and goals of the PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty Program.
- Reviews and explains the PADI Underwater Naturalist course standards and procedures from the PADI Specialty Course Instructor Manual and lists all student and instructor equipment requirements.
- Demonstrate expertise in developing all knowledge
- Explains how to control all parts of the course in a way that allows the diver to meet the course requirements.
- Attend a marketing and promotion workshop where you will learn techniques for promoting your PADI Underwater Naturalist course to students and the diving community.
- Participate in pricing workshops
Underwater Naturalist Instructor diving training in open water
There are 2 Underwater Naturalist training sessions to become a specialist diver, underwater naturalist at learner level.
During the Underwater Naturalist Instructor course, you must complete all diving requirements. which must at least practice diving 2 times out of 1 time
Before diving, you must explain the underwater naturalist’s open water training considerations.
During training dives in open water you must:
- Demonstrate mastery of all aquatic skills requirements for the Underwater Naturalist Specialization Program.
- Presenting Open Water instruction from the Underwater Naturalist diver course.
- Demonstrate mastery of all open water requirements in all Underwater Naturalist courses.
Congratulations, you are now a PADI Underwater Naturalist Instructor.
