AWARE Coral Reef Conservation course Information
Orientation & Knowledge Development
We start the AWARE Coral Reef Conservation specialty course at 09.00 with an Orientation that includes completion of paperwork and the PADI Medical statement.
The AWARE Coral Reef Conservation specialty course is suitable for all ages and available to divers and non-divers.
There are no mandatory scuba dives involved, however, we like to offer all our AWARE Coral Reef Conservation students an optional discover the reef snorkel and an introduction to Coral Watch.
Specialty Course Outline
There is an open book knowledge review with 15 questions that your Specialty Dive Instructor will guide you through and review.
The Instructor led knowledge development is conducted over approximately 5 hours.

- The complex nature of life on Coral Reefs
- Coral Reefs in peril
- Protect the Living Reef
AWARE Coral Reef Conservation – Explore the Reef
Practical assignment (optional but highly recommended)
There are No training dives to complete to become an AWARE Coral Reef Conservation specialist. However, we offer an optional discover the reef snorkeling experience.
During our Coral Reef Conservation snorkeling experience, we discuss role model snorkeling behavior and techniques.
We aim to point out two examples of different reef fish based on what they eat, such as Herbivores, Carnivores, Benthivores and Planktivores to highlight the importance of grazing to coral reefs.
We also aim to introduce you to the basic concept of Coral Watch, what it is, its mission, objectives and a brief overview of the Coral Watch monitoring method.
We will also take some photos to post on social media to educate our friends on the importance of being a marine protector.

How long does Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course take Koh Tao?
The Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course takes 1/2 day to complete on Koh Tao.
The specialty course can be combined with certain other courses in the PADI curriculum.
You will meet your instructor to go through the theory portion of the course. You will learn about Project AWARE as an organization and the importance of coral reefs.
You will get a better understanding of how coral functions, why coral reefs are so important and the perils coral reefs around the globe face.
What is the price of Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course on Koh Tao?
The cost of the Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty is THB 4,000. Included in this price are all course materials, instructor and certification fees.
Food and accommodation are not included. However, you can contact us to find out about accommodation options. We have rooms available at discounted rates when taking a diving course with us.
Ex-students will enjoy a 10% discount on the course price.
How many dives is Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course on Koh Tao?
The Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty is a theory only course and does not involve any dives.
Project AWARE describes it as a “fins off” course (meaning no dives required).
Participants only need to have an interest in the aquatic environment or a desire to take action for a clean and healthy ocean to enroll.
However, for an additional 1,000 THB, we offer two Open Water dives so that you can experience the underwater world and apply the knowledge of what you learned.
Who can sign up for the Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course Koh Tao?
Anyone with an interest in the aquatic environment can sign up for the Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty.
There is no minimum age requirement for the course. Both divers and non-divers can enroll for the specialty certification.
If you want to take the Open Water dives that we can offer as part of this specialty, current level of training, age and certification is applicable.
