As ocean explorers, the mystery of the sea at night is an enticing adventure. Diving at night is a whole new world, when the animals we see during the day go to sleep, and nocturnal creatures come out to play.
Our Coral reefs come alive when the sun goes down, full of life and activity.
The PADI Night diver specialty course is the perfect program to introduce you to the underwater world at night, under the glow of your dive light.

To enroll on a PADI Night Diver specialty course you must:
- Be an Open Water diver
- Have recent diving experience – we recommend completing a scuba review if you have not dived for 12 months
- 12 years of age or older
- Medically fit to dive
We conduct the Night Diver specialty course over 1-3 evenings depending on your personal timeframe.
The PADI Night Diver specialty course consists of two sections:
- Knowledge Development – read the PADI Night Diver specialty manual and complete the knowledge reviews
- Open Water training – 3 x training dives
At Black Turtle Dive we take our customer promise very seriously. All courses are conducted with a maximum of 4 students per PADI Instructor.
Our Dive Instructors are highly trained and will ensure you receive lots of attention and most importantly, progress at your own pace in a relaxed environment.
During your training we will slowly build your confidence and ability as you develop the skills necessary to become a night diving specialist diver.

16.30 – 18.00: Orientation & Knowledge Development

You have now completed the course and are a certified PADI Night diver.
PADI Night Diver Specialty Course Information
Orientation & Knowledge Development
We start the PADI Night Diver specialty course at 16.30 with an Orientation that includes completion of paperwork and the PADI Medical statement.
The PADI Night Diver specialty course consists of 3 training dives that we take at a selection of dive sites around Koh Tao.
There is also a Night Diver specialty manual to read and two open book knowledge reviews to complete that your dive instructor will guide you through and review.
The Instructor led knowledge development is conducted during the afternoon of day 1. Some of the subjects you will cover include:
- Factors to consider when evaluating a potential dive site for night diving
- Environmental conditions you should avoid when night diving
- Night diving planning considerations
- How to deal with stress, light failure, buddy separation & disorientation while night diving
- Techniques for descending & ascending at night to avoid disorientation
- Methods of communication while night diving
- Techniques for navigating underwater at night
Become a master of the darkness underwater and complete our 3 Night dive training dives to become a Night diver.
Night training dive #1
Discover the secrets of the underwater world at night with your first night dive in the warm waters around Koh Tao.
Getting into the water just before it goes dark, you will have a few minutes to adjust, as dusk turns to dark and day turns to night.
Your instructor will teach you correct use of your dive light and how to communicate at night. You will also learn how to use your compass at night with some simple navigation skills.
Night training dive #2
Night diver training dive number 2 and you are super excited. Gone will be any inhibitions you may have had during your first night diving experience, as you feel more comfortable with your equipment at night.
Your Instructor will teach you a little more navigation to start things off and then the rest of the dive will be focused on identifying nocturnal aquatic marine life that you discussed before the dive in your dive briefing.
And what do you expect to see? Great Barracuda roaming around the outside of the dive site, hunting for prey and their evening meal.
Discover Marine Life on a Koh Tao Night Diving Course
Blue spotted ribbontail rays will glide across the bottom, their eyes lighting up as they swim past your torch light looking for shrimp and crabs in the sand.
Cuttlefish, glowing, changing colours as their camouflage blends in with its surroundings waiting to ambush their prey.
And if we are lucky, a Hawksbill Turtle resting between the rocks after an active day swimming around the reef.
Night training dive #3
By now you are almost an expert and are most certainly comfortable underwater in the dark.
You will start your final Night dive training by executing a free descent as you free fall down onto the dive site and swim off straight into the dive with your buddy alongside.
You are now familiar with diving at night and feeling excited and confident. There is one last skill for you to complete and one more night dive highlight for you to experience.
Night Dive Specialty Instructor
Your Specialty Dive Instructor will signal for you and your buddy to remain in a stationary position for three minutes and switch your dive lights off.
If you wave your arms round slowly you will start to experience something quite extraordinary as the water around you lights up.
This is the plankton Bioluminescence and is it an amazing experience and a great way to finish your diving course off.
Congratulations – you are now a PADI Night dive specialist.

How long is PADI Night Diver Specialty course for on Koh Tao?
The Night Diver Specialty course takes 2 or 3 days to complete on Koh Tao, depending on how many dives you need to complete.
If you have completed the Night Adventure dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course, you only need to do 2 more dives to complete the specialty.
In that case, the night diver specialty course will be conducted over 2 days (evenings).
What is the cost of the PADI Night Diver Specialty course on Koh Tao?
The cost of the PADI Night Diver Specialty is THB 7,000 (3 dives) or THB 5,500 (2 dives).
Included in this price are all course materials, equipment rental (including dive computer and dive torch), instructor fees, boat trips and insurance.
If you have completed the Night Adventure dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course, you only need to do 2 more dives to complete the specialty.
Food and accommodation are not included. However, you can contact us to find out about accommodation options. We have AC rooms available at discounted rates when taking a diving course with us.
Ex-students will enjoy a 10% discount on the specialty course price.
How many dives is the PADI Night Diver Specialty course on Koh Tao?
The PADI Night Diver Specialty course consists of 3 Open Water night dives.
If you have completed the Night Adventure dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course, then this dive credits towards the Specialty certification and you only need to do 2 more dive to become a certified Night Specialty Diver.
In that case the specialty course price is THB 5,500 instead of THB 7,000.
What time do you go diving on the Night dives on Koh Tao?
The boat leaves around 18:00 to go out for night dives.
You will typically enter the water around sunset so there is still a bit of light for the first few minutes of your dive. That way you can gradually adjust to the night time environment.
After the dive, the boat returns to shore around 20:00. On the night dive trips, we do only 1 dive.
