The course will introduce you to Project AWARE’s 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet.
Our Project AWARE specialty course will help guide you towards personal commitments and actions that will help the environment.
By taking this course, it will contribute to you becoming a more competent and environmentally friendly scuba diver, freediver and snorkeler.
Learn to understand the correct ways to passively interact with marine life and the underwater environment.
Be an Ocean ambassador and set a good example to others, be a role model and raise awareness.

1 Day Koh Tao Project AWARE Course
The course consists of two sections:
- Attend the Project AWARE presentations
- Participate in all the ‘take action’ workshops
- Watch The Ugly Journey of our Trash video
- Complete the Project AWARE knowledge review
Optional Open Water snorkeling session.
Project AWARE Course Cost: 4,000 baht
Our Diving Instructors are highly trained and will ensure you receive lots of attention and most importantly, progress at your own pace in a relaxed environment.
During your training we will slowly build your confidence and ability as you develop the skills necessary to become a competent marine protector and Project AWARE specialist.

Project AWARE course Information
Orientation & Knowledge Development
We start the Project AWARE specialty course at 09.00 with an Orientation that includes completion of paperwork and the PADI Medical statement.
The Project AWARE specialty course is suitable for all ages and both divers and non-divers.
There are no mandatory scuba dives involved, however, at Black Turtle Dive we like to offer all our Project AWARE students an optional snorkeling dive.
The course outline follows Project AWARE’s Ten Ways a Dive Can Protect the Underwater Environment, elaborating on each one as we go along in the form of take action workshops.
There is an open book knowledge review with 10 questions that your specialty instructor will guide you through and review.
The Instructor led knowledge development is conducted over approximately 5 hours.
The subjects you will cover are:
- Be a buoyancy expert
- Be a role model
- Take only photos, leave only bubbles
- Protect only underwater marine life
- Become a debris activist
- Make responsible seafood choices
- Take action, speak out for conservation
- Be an Eco tourist
- Shrink your carbon footprint
- Give back to the Ocean
Project AWARE Specialist – Be a Marine Protector
Practical assignment (optional but highly recommended)
There are No training dives to complete to become a Project AWARE specialist. However, at Black Turtle Dive we offer an optional practical experience that includes snorkeling.
During our Black Turtle Dive Project AWARE practical experience, we discuss role model snorkeling behavior and techniques.
Beach Clean Up Koh Tao
We will organize a beach shoreline clean up that will involve snorkeling in shallow water.
We will introduce you to basic concepts used with our Dive Against Debris surveys including whether or not to remove objects and the type of marine debris we should report.
We also take photos that we can use on social media to make a post, so that we can help to educate our friends and families on the importance of being a marine protector.

What is the Project AWARE Organisation?
Project AWARE is a nonprofit organization working with volunteer scuba divers, creating a global movement for ocean protection.
The organization was created over 25 years ago by PADI and is now active as a separate nonprofit organization with global reach in over 182 countries. Their vision is a return to a clean and healthy ocean.
How long is the Project AWARE Specialty course for on Koh Tao?
The Project AWARE Specialty course takes 1/2 day to complete on Koh Tao. The specialty course can be combined with certain other courses in the PADI curriculum.
You will meet your instructor to go through the theory portion of the course and you will learn about the Project AWARE foundation and the aquatic world.
We will discuss the role of coral reefs and how aquatic resources are in danger. On top of that, we will review your role and responsibilities in protecting the underwater environment.

The cost of the Project AWARE Specialty is THB 4,000. Included in this price are all course materials and instructor fees. Ex-students will enjoy a 10% discount on the specialty course price.
Any person with an interest in the aquatic environment can enroll on the course, diver or non-diver.
What does Project AWARE do on Koh Tao?
Project AWARE aims to reduce underwater impacts of marine debris globally and locally and on Koh Tao, they can achieve this through AWARE specialty programs.
They also work towards achieving success in reaching their goals through their citizen science program Dive Against Debris.
Divers around the world can join and perform marine debris surveys after which they can submit the data online. This collected data will help to force policy change.
Over recent years, more than 60,000 divers in over 114 countries have removed over 1.6 million debris items from the ocean.
By doing this, they reduce the amount of pollution in the ocean and help save marine life from the effects of marine debris.
More recently, they have introduced the AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty aimed at protecting sharks and rays around the globe.
