To enroll on a PADI Wreck diver specialty course you must:
- Be an Adventure diver or have a qualifying certification from another agency
- Have recent diving experience – we recommend completing a scuba review if you have not dived for 12 months
- 15 years of age or older
- Medically fit to dive
PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course Duration 1.5 – 2 days
The course consists of two sections:
- Knowledge Development – read the PADI Wreck diver manual and complete the knowledge reviews
- Open Water training – 4 Wreck diver training dives

09.00 – 11.30: Orientation & Knowledge Development
12.30 – 17.00: Wreck diver training dives 1 & 2

Koh Tao PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course Information
Orientation & Knowledge Development
We start the PADI Wreck diver specialty course at 09.00 with an Orientation that includes completion of paperwork and the PADI Medical statement.
The PADI Wreck diver specialty course consists of 4 training dives on our local wreck, HTMS Sattakut.
There is also a PADI Wreck Specialty diver manual to read and an open book knowledge review with 16 questions that your dive instructor will guide you through and review.
The Specialty Instructor led knowledge development is conducted during the morning of day 1. Some of the subjects you will cover include:
- Why divers must pay close attention to local laws before planning a wreck dive
- How to avoid the potential hazards common to wrecks
- Dive planning and equipment considerations for wreck diving deeper than 18 metres
- Special training and equipment necessary for shipwreck penetration and hazards associated with entering a wreck
- Techniques used for entering, moving through and using a penetration line inside a wreck
- What to do if you experience loss of visibility due to silting, light failure or loss of air supply inside a wreck
On land, we will teach you useful knots and practice using the reel and penetration line that you will use underwater on dives 3 & 4
Wreck Dives – Exploring a Sunken Wreck on Koh Tao
There are 4 Wreck training dives to complete to become a PADI Wreck Diver specialist.
Wreck Diver training dive #1
Explore and experience the excitement of diving a ship wreck. Learn how to safely plan and execute a wreck dive deeper than 18 metres on the HTMS Sattakut.
Swim along the outside of HTMS Sattakut whilst identifying and avoiding many of the potential hazards.
Wreck Diver training dive #2
On your second dive of the HTMS Sattakut we would like you to create an outline map of the wreck with features and detail.
Calculate approximate size and mark points of interest. We will also ask you to survey the wreck, evaluating possible entrances & exits in preparation for a penetration dive the next day.
Wreck Diver training dive #3
On this dive you will practice the deployment and retrieval of a penetration line in the same way as you practiced on land the previous day.
This time you will be underwater on the outside of the HTMS Sattakut, swimming along the deployed penetration line so as to maintain contact with the line without kicking up any silt and whilst holding the dive light.
Wreck Diver training dive #4
This is your final training dive of the course and time to explore inside the HTMS Sattakut.
We will ask you to plan and perform a wreck penetration dive that enters and exits the HTMS Sattakut.
You will focus on moving through the wreck without causing excessive silt disturbance and using a dive light whilst keeping contact with the line.
Upon completion of all the requirements you will be certified as a PADI Wreck Specialty Diver.
Combine PADI Wreck & Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty Course
You can add more excitement and fun to your dives by combining our PADI Wreck diver course with the PADI Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty course.
Black Turtle Dive offer you a great opportunity to gain two certifications in the same timeframe that you need to complete the PADI Wreck diver course.
Your Dive Instructor will guide you through the knowledge development section and you will dive the HTMS Sattakut on Nitrox on your final two PADI Wreck diver training course dives.

What will I learn on the PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course?
During the course you will learn about common problems and hazards of wreck diving and the planning, organization, procedures and techniques for fun and safe wreck diving.
With your dive instructor, you will discuss the limitations for wreck penetration and you will review what specialized equipment is needed.
On top of that, you will review wreck penetration dive emergency procedures.
How long is the PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course on Koh Tao?
The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course takes 1 or 2 days to complete on Koh Tao.
If you have completed the Wreck Adventure dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course, you only need to do 3 more dives to complete the specialty. In that case, the course can be completed in 1 day.
The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course is perfect to combine with the PADI Enriched Air Diver Specialty. That way, both specialty certifications can be obtained within the same timeframe.
What is the cost of PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course Koh Tao?
The cost of the PADI Wreck Diver Specialty is THB 8,000 (4 dives) or THB 6,500 (3 dives).
Included in this price are all course materials, dive equipment rental (including dive computer and dive torch), instructor fees, boat trips and insurance.
If you have completed the Wreck Adventure dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course, you only need to do 3 more dives to complete the specialty.
Food and accommodation are not included. However, you can contact us to find out about accommodation options. We have AC rooms available at discounted rates when taking a diving course with us.
Ex-students will enjoy a 10% discount on the course price.
How many dives is PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course Koh Tao?
The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course consists of 4 Open Water training dives.
If you have completed the Wreck Adventure dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course, this dive credits towards the Specialty certification and you only need to do 3 more dives to become a certified Wreck Specialty Diver.
In that case, the course price is THB 6,500 instead of THB 8,000.
Will I go inside a Wreck on PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course on Koh Tao?
Yes, the last dive of the specialty is the penetration dive and you will go inside the HTMS Sattakut wreck on Koh Tao.
This is if you want to go inside, because by PADI Standards this is not a requirement.
The dives prior to the last training are to properly prepare you for the wreck penetration dive.
It is a thrilling experience to go inside the HTMS Sattakut wreck and we can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
