Discover a Whole New World Beneath the Surface
Experiencing the underwater world for the first time is something truly unforgettable. Once you have explored the marine life beneath the surface of the ocean, your perspective on the natural world is often changed forever. From colourful coral reefs and tropical fish to the peaceful sensation of weightlessness underwater, scuba diving offers an experience unlike any other.
Each year, thousands of people travel to Koh Tao to discover the island’s incredible dive sites and take their first breaths underwater. Scuba diving is not only an exciting adventure, but also an activity that brings a wide range of personal benefits. It encourages confidence, mindfulness, problem-solving, and environmental awareness, while also being a fantastic way to stay active, meet like-minded people, and connect with the ocean in a meaningful way.
Learning to dive also opens the door to countless future opportunities for travel and exploration. Whether diving coral reefs in Southeast Asia, exploring shipwrecks, or encountering marine wildlife around the world, becoming a certified diver introduces an entirely new dimension to future holidays and adventures.
For anyone considering learning to dive or simply wanting to experience scuba diving for the very first time, the Discover Scuba Diving program is the perfect introduction. Designed specifically for beginners with no prior experience required, the program provides a safe, enjoyable, and supervised introduction to the underwater world while allowing participants to experience the excitement of breathing and exploring beneath the surface for the first time.

What is The Discover Scuba Diving Program?
The Discover Scuba Diving program is the perfect introduction for anyone curious about exploring the underwater world for the first time. Often referred to as a “Try Dive,” this experience is designed to give complete beginners the opportunity to safely experience scuba diving in a relaxed and controlled environment without needing to complete a full certification course.
Suitable for anyone aged 10 years and above, the program is now completed within a single-day schedule that makes it easy to fit into your visit to the island. Your day begins in the morning at our dive centre with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning, moves into an extended session in our swimming pool, and finishes with two supervised open water ocean dives in the afternoon. The pool-first structure is designed to help you build genuine comfort and confidence in a calm, controlled environment before you enter the ocean.
During the experience, participants are introduced to the basic principles of scuba diving, essential safety concepts, and a selection of fundamental underwater skills before entering the ocean under the direct supervision of a professional dive instructor. Once in the water, participants have the opportunity to experience breathing underwater, explore shallow reef environments, and encounter marine life in a safe and enjoyable setting.
For many people, the Discover Scuba Diving experience becomes the first step towards a lifelong passion for diving, ocean exploration, and marine conservation. For others, it simply provides a memorable and exciting way to experience something completely new during their travels.
Whether you are considering becoming a certified diver in the future or simply want to discover what it feels like to breathe underwater for the very first time, the Discover Scuba Diving program offers an accessible, enjoyable, and unforgettable introduction to the world beneath the surface.
Why choose the Discover Scuba Diving Program?
The Discover Scuba Diving program is an ideal option for anyone interested in experiencing scuba diving for the first time but who may not yet feel ready to commit to a full certification course such as the PADI Open Water Course.
For many beginners, the idea of breathing underwater or descending beneath the surface for the first time can feel both exciting and slightly intimidating. Others may simply be unsure whether scuba diving is something they will truly enjoy. The Discover Scuba Diving experience is specifically designed to help ease these concerns by introducing participants to diving gradually, safely, and in a highly controlled environment under the supervision of a professional instructor.
Starting your day in the swimming pool is one of the most important benefits of the program. The pool environment removes the natural elements found in the ocean — waves, currents, and reduced visibility — allowing you to focus fully on your Instructor and the skills you are learning. This helps build genuine comfort and confidence before entering the ocean environment for your open water dives later in the day.
The program allows participants to build confidence at their own pace while becoming familiar with the equipment, underwater breathing, and basic diving skills before deciding whether they would like to continue their diving education further.
It is also an excellent option for travellers who may not have enough time during their trip to complete a full scuba certification course but still want the opportunity to experience the underwater world while visiting Koh Tao.
Another common reason people choose the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program is for reassurance and peace of mind. Experiencing scuba diving in a relaxed introductory setting allows individuals to better understand how comfortable they feel underwater before progressing onto more advanced training.
Whether you are curious about scuba diving, looking to overcome initial nerves, or simply wanting to try something completely new during your travels, the Discover Scuba Diving program offers a safe, enjoyable, and accessible introduction to the world beneath the surface.

Benefits of the Discover Scuba Diving Experience Koh Tao
For many people, the Discover Scuba Diving experience provides the perfect balance between adventure, flexibility, and reassurance. Some participants already know they eventually want to complete the full Open Water Diver course but would first like the peace of mind of experiencing scuba diving before fully committing to a certification program.
The Discover Scuba Diving program offers an ideal opportunity to become familiar with the underwater environment, learn how the equipment works, and experience breathing underwater in a safe and controlled setting before progressing further. For many beginners, this initial introduction helps build confidence and removes much of the uncertainty often associated with trying scuba diving for the first time.
Our swimming pool-first structure adds another significant benefit. By spending an extended morning session in a large, calm, and controlled swimming pool environment, participants have time to become fully comfortable with the equipment and breathing techniques before we head out to the ocean. This means that when it is time for your open water dives, you spend far less of the ocean time practising skills and much more of it exploring the reef.
The program is also an excellent choice for travellers who may have limited time on the island or who are not currently in a position to commit financially or schedule-wise to a multi-day certification course. Despite being a single-day experience, participants have the opportunity to complete two full ocean dives on Koh Tao’s beautiful reefs under the direct supervision of a professional instructor.
Whether you are looking to test the waters before enrolling in a full course, gain confidence in the ocean, or simply experience something completely new during your travels, the Discover Scuba Diving experience offers an accessible and rewarding introduction to scuba diving.
Now that you have identified that the Discover Scuba Diving program may be the right choice for you, let’s take a closer look at what you will learn during the experience.
What you will learn during your Discover Scuba Diving Program
The Discover Scuba Diving program is carefully designed to provide beginners with a safe, enjoyable, and structured introduction to the underwater world within a single day. The experience is divided into three simple sections — knowledge development through PADI eLearning, an extended pool training session, and two open water ocean dives — allowing participants to gradually build confidence and understanding before entering the ocean.
Once enrolled, participants begin with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning, a modern, interactive digital learning module that can be completed on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. You have the option to complete the eLearning in advance from home if you book your experience online, or you can complete it with us at the dive centre in the morning. This flexibility allows you to arrive already prepared and ready to spend more of your day in the water.
The eLearning takes you through the basic principles of scuba diving — including important breathing rules, equalisation techniques, and essential safety concepts — through a mix of text, images, and video. It also covers the PADI Diver Medical Questionnaire and the Liability Release, both of which are completed digitally as part of the eLearning process.
As humans are not naturally designed to breathe underwater, understanding how the body responds beneath the surface is an important part of learning to dive safely and comfortably. During the briefing that follows the eLearning, your instructor will explain some of the sensations you may experience underwater and how to manage them calmly and confidently.
Participants are then introduced to the scuba diving equipment used throughout the experience. Your professional Dive Instructor will explain the purpose and function of each piece of equipment, including how it works and how it helps divers breathe, move, and remain comfortable underwater. This equipment orientation helps participants become more familiar and confident before entering the water.

Like all forms of scuba diving, underwater communication is also an important part of the program. Since verbal communication is not possible underwater, divers rely on internationally recognised hand signals to communicate with their instructor and dive buddies. Before the dive, your instructor will guide you through the key signals you will use during the experience, helping you feel more comfortable and connected underwater.
By the time participants enter the water, they already have a solid understanding of the basic concepts, equipment, and communication methods used in scuba diving — making the overall experience both exciting and approachable for first-time divers.

Learn Hand Signals
Following your introduction to basic underwater hand signals, your instructor will begin guiding you through some of the key skills and techniques used during scuba diving. These include how to correctly use both the regulator and dive mask underwater, as well as simple methods for clearing water from the equipment safely and comfortably if needed.
While these skills may sound unfamiliar at first, they are taught gradually and demonstrated clearly by your instructor before being practised in the water under close supervision. Learning these techniques helps build confidence and allows participants to become more comfortable breathing and moving underwater for the first time.
Underwater communication is another important aspect of the experience. Since divers cannot speak beneath the surface, hand signals are used to communicate information such as “OK,” “slow down,” “problem,” or to simply point out interesting marine life. Becoming familiar with these signals helps participants feel more engaged and connected during the dive experience.
Finally, an important part of the Discover Scuba Diving program is learning how to interact responsibly with the underwater environment. Participants are briefed on respectful diving practices, including maintaining good buoyancy, avoiding contact with coral reefs, and observing marine life without causing disturbance.
Developing an appreciation for marine ecosystems and understanding how to engage with ocean life responsibly is an essential part of becoming a safe and environmentally conscious diver.
Your Extended Pool Training Session
Now comes the part many participants look forward to most — entering the water and experiencing scuba diving for the very first time.
The Discover Scuba Diving experience is designed to be conducted in a safe, controlled, and comfortable environment, which is why the initial in-water session takes place in our large, spacious swimming pool. This setting provides the ideal space for beginners to become familiar with breathing underwater and practising the basic foundations of scuba diving at a relaxed pace, without any of the distractions or environmental factors found in the ocean.
The extended morning pool session is one of the key elements that makes the new format so effective. Because you have the whole morning in the pool, there is no rush at any point. You have the time and space to practise each skill fully, ask any questions you may have, and only progress to the next stage when you feel completely ready and comfortable.
During the session, your instructor will assist you in setting up and fitting your scuba equipment before gradually introducing you to the water. You will start in shallow water where you can stand comfortably with your head above the surface, breathing through the regulator to become familiar with the sensation of breathing underwater. Once ready, you will kneel down under the water and begin learning your first scuba skills.
One of the first skills introduced is learning how to use the Buoyancy Control Device (BCD). Divers are shown how to safely inflate and deflate the BCD in order to control buoyancy and maintain comfort both at the surface and underwater. Understanding buoyancy is one of the key foundations of scuba diving and plays an important role in diver safety, control, and environmental awareness.
As the session progresses, participants continue developing confidence underwater while practising basic scuba skills under the close supervision of their instructor. By the end of the pool session you should feel comfortable with the equipment, breathing techniques, and underwater sensations, giving you the ideal foundation for your two open water ocean dives in the afternoon.

Discover Scuba Diving Skills
Once you feel comfortable in the water and confident breathing through the scuba equipment, your instructor will begin introducing a selection of basic scuba diving skills. These skills are carefully designed to help you become more familiar with the equipment and to ensure you feel safe, relaxed, and in control underwater.
Before each skill is practised, your instructor will provide a full briefing explaining how the skill is performed, why it is important for diver safety and comfort, and the underwater hand signals associated with each exercise. Your instructor will then demonstrate the skill clearly underwater before guiding you step-by-step as you practise it yourself.
Some of the key skills introduced during the Discover Scuba Diving experience include:
- Breathing comfortably underwater
- Regulator clearing
- Regulator recovery
- Mask clearing
- Equalisation techniques
- Inflating and deflating the BCD at the surface
These introductory skills are taught gradually and at a pace suited to each participant, helping to build confidence and familiarity with the underwater environment.
Once the skills have been completed successfully, participants are then guided into slightly deeper water where the real fun begins. This is the moment where many first-time divers truly begin to relax and enjoy the experience of scuba diving — swimming underwater, exploring the environment, and experiencing the unique sensation of near weightlessness beneath the surface.
For many people, this first underwater exploration becomes the beginning of a lifelong passion for diving and ocean adventure.
Your Two Open Water Ocean Dives
By the end of your morning pool session, you will have developed a solid introduction to the basic foundations of scuba diving and gained hands-on experience performing several essential underwater skills. More importantly, you will have had the opportunity to become comfortable breathing underwater and experience firsthand what scuba diving truly feels like.
After a short lunch break, we head to the boat and travel to the first of one of Koh Tao’s beautiful dive sites for the highlight of the day: your two open water ocean dives. Both dives are completed to a maximum depth of 12 metres / 40 feet, and both are conducted under the direct supervision of your PADI Dive Instructor.
Your first ocean dive gives you the opportunity to take everything you learned in the pool and apply it in a real marine environment. Your instructor will lead you at a relaxed pace around a shallow section of the coral reef, guiding you through the underwater environment and pointing out the fish, corals, and other marine life you encounter along the way.
Between the two dives you will return to the boat for a surface interval. This gives you time to rest, warm up, hydrate, and share your first-dive impressions with the other divers on board. Your instructor will also use this time to brief you on your second dive, giving you an idea of what to expect and any specific highlights to look out for.
Your second ocean dive is where the experience really comes to life. With the initial nerves of your first dive behind you, most divers find their second dive far more enjoyable — you feel more relaxed, more in control of your buoyancy, and better able to look around and take in the reef. Average dive time is around 40 minutes per dive, depending on your breathing rate; the more relaxed you become, the longer your air will last.
Entering the open ocean for the first time is often the highlight of the entire experience, providing the chance to explore coral reefs, encounter tropical marine life, and truly discover the feeling of weightlessness and freedom that makes scuba diving so unique.

Learn Discover Scuba Diving in the Ocean
Before progressing into the open water portion of the Discover Scuba Diving experience, there will always be an opportunity to ask any remaining questions regarding your pool session, the scuba equipment, or what to expect during your ocean dives. This is an important stage of the experience and helps ensure participants feel comfortable, informed, and confident before entering the open ocean.
As a Discover Scuba Diving participant, you will remain under the direct supervision of a qualified dive professional at all times. Your instructor will guide you throughout both of your ocean dives, both at the surface and underwater, while continuing to provide support, reassurance, and assistance whenever needed.
The transition from the pool environment into the ocean is designed to be gradual and controlled, allowing participants to apply the skills they have already practised in a real underwater setting. Your instructor will closely monitor participants throughout both dives, ensuring that everyone remains safe, relaxed, and comfortable while exploring the underwater world for the first time.
Knowing that a professional instructor is always nearby allows participants to fully enjoy the experience while building confidence in the water and focusing on the excitement of discovering marine life and coral reefs in the open ocean environment.
What is next after the Discover Scuba Diving Experience?
It is important to understand that the Discover Scuba Diving program is an introductory diving experience rather than a full scuba diving certification course. While the program provides an exciting and memorable introduction to the underwater world, participants do not receive a certified scuba diving qualification upon completion.
The primary aim of the Discover Scuba Diving experience is to allow beginners to safely experience scuba diving, develop basic underwater skills, and decide whether they would like to continue their diving education further.
Because the program is not a certification course, there are certain limitations regarding future independent diving activities. In order to participate in additional dives beyond the introductory experience, participants would either need to complete another supervised Discover Scuba Diving session or continue onto a recognised scuba certification program such as the PADI Open Water Diver course.
For many people, the Discover Scuba Diving experience becomes the first step towards becoming a certified diver. After gaining confidence and experiencing the excitement of breathing underwater for the first time, many participants choose to continue their training and progress onto the Open Water course, which provides a full scuba diving certification recognised worldwide.
Whether you choose to continue your diving journey immediately or simply enjoy the experience as a one-time adventure, the Discover Scuba Diving program offers a safe, enjoyable, and accessible introduction to the incredible world beneath the surface.

Discover Scuba Diving & PADI Open Water Course
The Open Water Diver course is one of the most recognised and the most popular scuba diving certification in the world and is the natural next step for many participants following their Discover Scuba Diving experience.
While the Discover Scuba Diving program provides an introduction to the underwater world, the Open Water course allows you to become a fully certified diver, qualified to dive independently with a buddy to depths of up to 18 metres / 60 feet anywhere in the world.
For many people, the Discover Scuba Diving experience acts as the perfect confidence-building introduction before progressing onto full certification. After experiencing breathing underwater and developing basic scuba skills, many participants feel inspired to continue learning and further develop their confidence, comfort, and abilities in the water.
An additional benefit is that your Discover Scuba Diving experience can be credited towards your PADI Open Water Diver course for up to 12 months after completion. This allows for a smooth and natural progression into the Open Water course without needing to repeat the introductory elements you have already completed — whether you continue the following day, later during your holiday, or on a future trip to Koh Tao.
Upgrading to the Open Water course is an excellent way to continue your personal development as a diver while gaining a globally recognised certification that opens the door to future diving adventures around the world.
Discuss Your Options with Your Instructor
If you are interested in progressing further, your dive instructor will be able to explain exactly how the transition from Discover Scuba Diving to the Open Water course works. They can answer any questions you may have regarding the course structure, skills, theory sessions, and what to expect throughout the training process.
For many new divers, continuing directly onto the Open Water course feels like a natural next step, allowing them to maintain momentum, continue building confidence, and spend even more time exploring the underwater world.
